I think the whole point is so that you don't have to take it of to check on your wound. That way saves time & pain.

If you put a color on it, it destroys the whole purpose of the bandage which is to light up different colors based on the oxygen level. The shape cannot be changed since it is spray on, whatever "shape" you spray it on as, that's the way it's going to dry.

How would you take it off....

If you scab/wound is itchy and you don't want to/can't scratch it, pull the bandage off hard.

So.. what's a downside to the "smart" bandage?

That is really cool. That can help lots of people and if they could release the drugs or medicine, that could help wounded soldiers and seriously injured people.

Make it work! If this is as good as it sounds they need to release it a.s.a.p, and release a cheaper kind with just basic monitoring and a more expensive kind with drugs and medications inside.
