Hailed as “a breakneck, jam-packed roller coaster of an adventure” by J. K. Rowling, this New York Times bestseller is the first installment in the explosive tween fantasy series by famed Hollywood director Chris Columbus (of Harry Potter fame) and bestselling author Ned Vizzini (It’s Kind of a Funny Story).
Siblings Brendan, Eleanor, and Cordelia Walker once had everything they could ever want. But everything changed when Dr. Walker lost his job. Now the family must relocate to an old Victorian house, formerly the home of occult novelist Denver Kristoff—a house that simultaneously feels creepy and too good to be true. By the time the Walkers realize that one of their neighbors has sinister plans for them, they’re banished to a primeval forest way off the grid.
Bloodthirsty medieval warriors patrol the woods around them, supernatural pirates roam the neighboring seas, and a power-hungry queen rules the land. To survive, the siblings will have to be braver than they ever thought possible—and to fight against their darkest impulses. The key may lie in their own connection to the secret Kristoff legacy. But as they unravel that legacy, they’ll discover that it’s not just their family that’s in danger . . . it’s the entire world.

This is one of my favorite books. It was very EXCITING, and it had me going. It was fast pacing and mysterious. It was very adventurous, magical, and fantasy type of book. Th words were like tumbling down the pages(not literally, you know what I mean, when you're enjoying it, and the pages are turned fast... that literally) anyways it starts with Cordelia, Brendan, and Eleanor Walker, the Walker siblings. They had everything and were kind of spoiled until they moved to a creepy dark house. Dun dun dun, surprises, surprises, the Walker siblings learn and to fight their battles wisely, to make things right for their parents, and for themselves. Dun dun dun...
This book is full of adventures to many adventures. Some parts of the book were told twice and it has a slow start. I like how they use magic kind of like harry potter books
One of the greatest fantasy novels of all time! Awesome awesome awesome!

Someone strange once came to the Walkers brand new house. Something happened, something strange. From then on the walker kids were trapped in fairy tale books with out their parents having to make new friends along the way to survive.
Brendan, Eleanor, and Cordelia Walker once had everything: two loving parents, a beautiful house in San Francisco, and all the portable electronic devices they could want. But everything changed when Dr. Walker lost his job in the wake of a mysterious incident. Now in dire straits, the family must relocate to an old Victorian house that used to be the home of occult novelist Denver Kristoff—a house that feels simultaneously creepy and too good to be true. I suggest it to all!
When three children are left stranded in their house, they have to find a way to get out and return to their parents? But how will they? With their new-found friend, they travel as fast as they can to get back home, and away from the forces of evil keeping them there.
