This first book in The Cupcake Diaries is told through the perspective of Katie Brown. We find Katie miserable on the first day of middle school. Her best friend Callie came back from camp boy-crazy and part of a whole new group of friends. When it's made clear that Callie is in the PGC (Popular Girls Club) and Katie is not invited to join, Katie suddenly feels incredibly alone. Katie realizes if she’s going to survive middle school she needs to seriously regroup and find some new friends. But how? Looking around her table, Katie notices the other students seeming a bit lost, as well. This is a story set in the real world, which is a refreshing change from all of the new books based on mythology and fairy tales. The story is set in a realistic environment that any reader can relate to. The story line is very real and is easy to follow, yet still keeps the reader entranced. It is not heavy reading by any means, but is a good story for younger children and older children will like to realistic plot.

This book is about finding friends in a new environment and a new hobby. When Kate starts middle school she feels very alone when she finds that her old best friend Callie has replaced her with a new group of friends who are "better" than Katie. After that Katie meets Emma, Alexis, and Mia. Together they become the cupcake club. Which eventually expands into a business of making and selling custom cupcakes.
This painfully real middle school drama is what every public school girl experiences. Its a super fun book especially if you love cupcakes! Emma's brothers, Alexis's older sister, and Mia's stepdad and stepbrother to-be add some spice to the Cupcake Club's delicious adventures! Be sure to check out the other books in this series!:)
