Winner of the Newbery Medal and a #1 New York Times bestseller!

This stirring and unforgettable novel from renowned author Katherine Applegate celebrates the transformative power of unexpected friendships. Inspired by the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, this illustrated novel is told from the point-of-view of Ivan himself.

Having spent 27 years behind the glass walls of his enclosure in a shopping mall, Ivan has grown accustomed to humans watching him. He hardly ever thinks about his life in the jungle. Instead, Ivan occupies himself with television, his friends Stella and Bob, and painting. But when he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from the wild, he is forced to see their home, and his art, through new eyes.

The One and Only Ivan was hailed as a best book of the year by Kirkus, School Library Journal, and Amazon, demonstrating it is a true classic in the making. In the tradition of timeless stories like Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little, Katherine Applegate blends humor and poignancy to create Ivan's unforgettable first-person narration in a story of friendship, art, and hope. An author's note depicts the differences between the fictional story and true events.

I read it with my class it was sooooooo sad but beautiful too.

I love The One And Only Ivan! It's just such a great book. The mix of happy endings and sad parts is perfect. My favorite character is Bob, he's just so sarcastic and funny. 😁

Ivan is a Silverback gorilla. Except he is highly intelligent, and sees the world from a unique perspective. He is somewhat ignorant, but then again, so are humans. Ivan is happy with his life. Of course he misses living in the wild, and living in a home, but he loves his cage in his mall. He has three great friends by his side. Bob the stray dog. Stella the wise elephant. And Ruby. The human who likes art as much as Ivan. Yes that's right, The One and Only Ivan is an artist. He loves to draw and paint. But one day, everything changes when Stella here's a baby elephant crying out for her mother. Stella knows that the baby is on her way to the mall. Ivan doesn't believe her, but Stella tells him to be patient. Sure enough, the next day, and adorable baby elephant named Ruby arrives at the mall. She is scared, and a nervous wreck. But Stella decides to be her guide and assure her that she will be okay. (Which ironically isn't true.) Ruby goes from a nervous wreck to a happy, curious, and excited little elephant that draws more crowds to the mall. Ivan knows that Stella is in great pain, and Ruby notes that Stella can no longer stand due to her foot that keeps getting infected since it never seems to have had healed since Stella's days in the circus. One night, Stella askes Ivan to make a promise to her. A promise that Ivan will make sure that Ruby gets a better life than she has. A promise that will help Ruby. Stella askes Ivan this because she knows that she will not be alive to see morning. Sure enough, by morning, Stella is gone. Ivan doesn't think that he should fulfill the promise, and it's not a big deal until he sees the way Mack treats her with the claw stick, and yells at Ruby. Ivan hatches a plan to get Ruby to a safe place. A zoo. Some parts will make you cry, but this is a powerful story for all ages.

Ivan is a Silverback gorilla. He is very intelligent, and his perspective of the world is very unique. Ivan is quite happy with his life. He has 3 amazing friends. Bob, the stray. Stella the wise elephant. And Julia. Ivan lives in a small cage at a mall. He's been there for a while. One day, everything changes. Stella tells Ivan and Bob that she can hear a baby elephant. And it is coming in their direction. Sure enough, a baby elephant is delivered to the mall. Her name is Ruby, and she was taken from her home in Africa. Stella uses all the free time that she has in the day to comfort Ruby, and ensure her that everything would be fine. Ruby and Ivan become friends as days pass while Stella is getting weaker and weaker because of her foot that is always getting infected because it never healed properly after the circus accident from her youth days. It gets to the point that Stella can no longer stand. One night, Stella asked Ivan to promise her that she won't let Ruby live the same life that Stella did. Confined. Shackled. Lonely. By morning, Stella is gone. It is a sad day for everyone and Ruby is very nervous and scared now that Stella is gone, and nobody is there to keep her safe. Ivan decides that he should keep his word, and make sure that Ruby gets a better home. I really recommend this book. I mean, there are sad parts that will make you cry if you're sensitive, but overall it is a phenomenal book. I can't wait to read The One and Only Bob!
