Winner of the Newbery Medal and a #1 New York Times bestseller!

This stirring and unforgettable novel from renowned author Katherine Applegate celebrates the transformative power of unexpected friendships. Inspired by the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, this illustrated novel is told from the point-of-view of Ivan himself.

Having spent 27 years behind the glass walls of his enclosure in a shopping mall, Ivan has grown accustomed to humans watching him. He hardly ever thinks about his life in the jungle. Instead, Ivan occupies himself with television, his friends Stella and Bob, and painting. But when he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from the wild, he is forced to see their home, and his art, through new eyes.

The One and Only Ivan was hailed as a best book of the year by Kirkus, School Library Journal, and Amazon, demonstrating it is a true classic in the making. In the tradition of timeless stories like Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little, Katherine Applegate blends humor and poignancy to create Ivan's unforgettable first-person narration in a story of friendship, art, and hope. An author's note depicts the differences between the fictional story and true events.

I like The One And Only Ivan. It is about a gorilla and elephants who are in a circus, and Ivan is the main character. He is the headliner of the circus too. It had some sad parts that I didn't like, but I did enjoy the happy parts. I recommend this book to any one who like talking animals, funny things and love -- just know there are some really sad parts. Overall, I enjoyed this book. In the book, the main characters are Ivan, Stella, and Ruby. It is a nonfiction story. Check out more by reading The One And Only Ivan and watching the movie.

I have read this book and I think it's pretty good.

It was sad that Stella had to die.

I really enjoy reading this book. Because it has unique phrases to describes a character. Ivan is the main character of this book. He have a deep thoughts and feelings. Being a silverback gorilla who stuck in a cage is not easy thing to do for him. I love the different point of view how we see gorilla and how they see the world and humans. Humans can be advantageous or disadvantageous to the animals. Because Ivan and baby elephant Ruby has a different memories about humans. Ivan lost his family because of humans violence but for Ruby human helped to save from the danger.

I LOVE THIS BOOK! it's sad in the beginning and middle and awesome at the end!
