This gripping story, written in sparse first-person, free-verse poems, is the compelling tale of Billie Jo's struggle to survive during the dust bowl years of the Depression. With stoic courage, she learns to cope with the loss of her mother and her grieving father's slow deterioration. There is hope at the end when Billie Jo's badly burned hands are healed, and she is able to play her beloved piano again. The 1998 Newbery Medal winner.

i liked the book

The book had a good story line but it was to sad and boring

Out of the Dust was a great story about Billie Jo going through rough times. Billie Jo goes through a lot of pain and suffering, But I think the book becomes very boring at times.

a good book some of it was a little boring but otherwise a good book for all ages to read

It was a good but but sometimes it would repeat the same thing but the book was interesting.

At the beginning of the book it was boring and in the middle it got more interesting and then i enjoyed it overall. The Dust Bowl was a sad time.
