Since 2015, members of the Incredible Science Machine have been mesmerizing fans with their complex chain reactions using tens of thousands of dominoes and props. This year was no exception. On March 23, the team set into motion their latest spell-binding creation that culminated in the toppling of a massive centerpiece comprising 76,017 dominoes.
It took the 18 experts — hailing from four different countries — ten days and over 1,800 hours to set up the live art installation that was divided into several sections, each representing a continent. However, it was well worth it. In addition to impressing the audience gathered to watch the event in Westland, Michigan, the structure also smashed the Guinness World Record for “Most dominoes toppled in a circle bomb/circle field.” The previous record was held by Germany’s Sinner Domino Entertainment, which built a 54,321 dominoes circle in 2014.
The group’s leader, 22-year-old domino artist Steve Price, says, “I started the Incredible Science Machine to create the first opportunity in North America for domino and chain reaction artists to work together on a large scale project that would introduce domino art to a large live and online audience.” The team hopes the domino installations will inspire kids to take up the craft and help increase their interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) related subjects.
